Kumbhalgarh Fort sits high in the Aravalli hills, about 100 km from Udaipur. The distance looks short, but the last stretch is a narrow hill road with plenty of bends, so allow 2 to 2.5 hours each way. It is the most rewarding drive out of Udaipur and one where it helps to have a driver who knows the road.
History
Rana Kumbha of Mewar built the fort in the 15th century, and it is one of the Hill Forts of Rajasthan on the UNESCO World Heritage list. It is best known for its wall, which runs for about 36 km over the ridges and is often called the second-longest continuous wall in the world. It is also the birthplace of Maharana Pratap. The climb to Badal Mahal at the top is steep, but it gives you the view over the hills that most people come for.
Popular day plan
Ranakpur's marble Jain temple is on the far side of the same hills, so many visitors do both in one day. It is a long day in the car, which is when an Ertiga or Innova Crysta earns its fare.
01
Leave early and climb the fort before the midday heat.
03
Return to your hotel in the evening.
Staying overnight
Both are easier if you stay the night near the fort than if you drive the hill road back in the dark. Book a one-way drop, then a pickup the next day.
Held at the fort in the evening.
The hills around the fort; local operators run jeep safaris.
Book the Kumbhalgarh to Udaipur cab for the return.
Onward travel
Kumbhalgarh is roughly on the way from Udaipur towards Jodhpur, so instead of coming back you can book the Udaipur to Jodhpur cab and ask for a Kumbhalgarh stop on the way.
