The tomb was substantially finished in 1643, although work on other project sections proceeded for another ten years. The Taj Mahal structure is thought that it was finished in its whole in 1653 for a price determined at the time to be roughly 32 million, which would be approximately 70 billion (nearly US $1 billion) in 2020. The building project employed 20,000 craftspeople and was overseen by a board of engineers chaired by the emperor's court architect, Ustad Ahmad Lahauri. The stone dome above the tomb is the most remarkable feature. The dome is over 35 metres (115 feet) tall, which is close to the height of the foundation, and is emphasised by the circular "drum" it stands on, which is around 7 metres (23 feet) tall. The dome is also known as an onions dome or amrud due to its shape (guava dome). The top is embellished with a lotus motif, emphasising its height. The dome's shape is highlighted by four domed chattris (kiosks) situated at its four corners, which mimic the bulb shape of the main dome. The dome has an uneven shape. Their columned bases bring light to the tomb by opening through the roof.
The minarets, which stand over 40 metres (130 feet) tall, demonstrate the designer's love of symmetry. They were intended to function as operational minarets, a typical feature of mosques that the muezzin to summon the Islamic devout to prayer. Two functional balconies that encircle the tower effectively divide each minaret into three equal pieces. At the pinnacle of the building is the last balcony, topped by a chatter similar to those found in the tomb. The chattris are all decorated with a lotus motif topped with a gilt finial. The minarets were built somewhat outside the foundation so that the material would be exposed if the structure collapsed, which was common with many tall structures of the time.
