Jal Mahal was supposedly erected in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh as a hunting lodge for his duck shooting exploits, not as a palace to stay in. He also created the lake by building a dam between the hills.
Maharaja Madho Singh reportedly built it as a hunting lodge in the 1750s. His son Madho Singh II expanded the palace's courtyard gardens in the 18th century.
Maharaja Jai Singh II of Amer redesigned Jal Mahal and its lake in the 18th century. Later, sewage and waterlogging caused the palace's facade to deteriorate. Thus, restoration work was needed to return it to its former glory. Though the terrace contains trees, the garden hasn't been restored to its former magnificence, including the arched entrances. Plans are planned to recreate the rooftop garden at Jaipur's Amer Palace.
